PROJECT RESULTS EXPLOITATION:

SECURING THE LEGAL CLEARANCE FOR MARKET ENTRY

Successful commercialization is the benchmark for any research project. Yet, innovative agrifood and bio-based solutions often face a compliance bottleneck that prevents them from reaching the market. Rigorous EU safety regulations and classification standards act as a gatekeeper for the Single Market. In the absence of early-stage legal validation, projects risk producing technically validated results that are legally unmarketable. This gap between scientific achievement and regulatory readiness can lead to significant resource depletion and missed market opportunities.

We determine the precise legal pathways required to transform project results into marketable assets. By identifying the correct classification at the earliest stages—whether a substance is a food, supplement, feed additive, or cosmetic—we replace assumptions with legal certainty.

Our expertise in navigating complex authorizations (such as Novel Foods or waste reclassification) ensures that exploitation strategies are built on a solid regulatory foundation. This proactive approach secures the necessary clearance for a seamless transition from the laboratory to the EU Single Market.

Our track record in high-impact projects demonstrates our ability to dismantle the barriers to market entry:

For the ProFuture project, we dismantled the “regulatory ceiling” for microalgae proteins. We analysed four target species and developed a roadmap for Joint Authorizations under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. This collaborative legal strategy allowed SMEs to share the financial burden of safety dossiers, turning an expensive legal hurdle into a shared exploitation asset. Similarly, in CAMELMILK, we leveraged the simplified procedure for traditional foods from third countries, creating a legal bridge for cross-border trade that saved years of time.

In the circular economy, “waste” is a legal liability; “ingredients” are economic assets. Within the EcoeFISHent consortium, we acted as the legal architect for the upcycling of fishing side-streams. We managed the complex transition from Animal By-Products (ABP) status to high-value industrial raw materials, ensuring that extracted proteins and oils met the safety standards for food, feed, and cosmetics.

For the WASTELESS project, we established the regulatory protocols for upcycling food side-streams. By defining the specific safety and compliance criteria necessary to transform unavoidable waste into authorized ingredients, we provided the legal certainty required for industrial partners to invest in new circular supply chains.

Determining if a result falls under Novel Food, GMO, or conventional food/feed regulations.

Guiding the collection of toxicological and nutritional data required for EFSA or ECHA notifications.

Ensuring that exploitation agreements reflect the regulatory responsibilities of all partners.

Aligning the business case for a new product with the legal reality of its target market.

By partnering with us for your project results exploitation assessment, you eliminate the risk of late-stage legal rejection. We ensure that your project results are not just innovative, but “market-ready” for 450 million European consumers. We provide the legal clearance that transforms scientific excellence into commercial reality.

Partnering with us for your exploitation analysis removes the uncertainty of regulatory rejection. We specialize in bridging the gap between laboratory success and commercial launch, ensuring your project outcomes meet the rigorous safety and classification standards of the EU. We turn your innovations into legally protected, marketable assets.
