Our Focus Areas
Strategic Integration for EU Consortia: Technical-Legal Benchmarking
WIISE serves as a specialized partner for international research consortia, acting as the bridge between scientific innovation and the regulatory frameworks required for institutional recognition.
Our role is the operationalization of compliance: we transform high-level concepts of sustainability, safety, and inclusion into documented, technical-legal benchmarks. This ensures that project outcomes are market-ready and policy-aligned from the earliest stages of R&D.

FOOD LAW
Navigating European Regulatory Complexity
WIISE provides the technical-legal architecture necessary to navigate the complex hierarchy of EU food regulations. We specialize in ensuring that project innovations meet the stringent requirements of the General Food Law (Reg. EC 178/2002) and subsequent mandates regarding hygiene, official controls, and safety. Our focus is on providing consortia with a clear roadmap for legal feasibility, ensuring that research outcomes are not only scientifically sound but also institutionally recognized and prepared for the European market.

EU FOOD POLICIES
Toward a Sustainable Food System
We align consortium activities with the core objectives of the European Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy. Our focus is on the regulatory operationalization of sustainability, translating high-level policy goals into specific technical actions. By mapping the legislative evolution of the “Legislative Framework for Sustainable Food Systems” (FSFS), we help partners anticipate regulatory shifts and ensure that project results contribute directly to the EU’s transition toward a resilient and fair food system..

FOOD & MENTAL HEALTH
Bridging Nutrition, Science, and Law
WIISE addresses the emerging “brain-food” nexus by examining the regulatory requirements for nutritional interventions aimed at cognitive and psychological well-being. We focus on the intersection of the Health Claims Regulation (Reg. EC 1924/2006) and the latest scientific evidence on the gut-brain axis. By identifying the technical-legal benchmarks for substantiating functional benefits, we help consortia navigate the rigorous evidentiary standards required to translate nutritional science into legally compliant consumer products and policies.

FOOD ADVOCACY & JOURNALISM
Building Public Trust through Independent Media
Through our specialized platforms, GIFT (Great Italian Food Trade) and Food Times, we provide consortia with an authoritative voice in the European legislative dialogue. Our focus is on technical-legal dissemination—translating complex project results into high-impact information for regulators, stakeholders, and the public. This ensures that the project’s impact is not only visible but also influential in shaping future policy and consumer perception through independent, evidence-based journalism.

NOVEL FOOD
Overcoming the Barriers to Industrial Scaling
The introduction of innovative proteins—such as microalgae, insects, and precision-fermentation products—requires rigorous adherence to the Novel Food Regulation (Reg. EU 2015/2283). WIISE focuses on the regulatory characterization of these ingredients, identifying the safety data and toxicological benchmarks needed for EFSA applications. We provide consortia with the legal expertise to manage the path from laboratory prototype to authorized commercial product, ensuring compliance with manufacturing standards and safety assessments.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Transforming Waste into Value-Added Assets
Valorising agri-food side-streams requires navigating complex “End-of-Waste” criteria and by-product regulations. Within projects like EcoeFISHent, WIISE focuses on the legal requirements for upcycling, ensuring that recovered materials meet safety standards for food, feed, or cosmetic use. We help consortia build legally resilient circular value chains by identifying the technical benchmarks for material purity and the regulatory frameworks for cross-sectoral industrial symbiosis.

SOCIAL INCLUSION
Ensuring Equity and Ethical Integrity in Food Systems
Our focus on social inclusion is rooted in the practical application of technical-legal frameworks to protect cultural dietary patterns and promote fair trade. In projects like CAMELMILK, we focused on the regulatory requirements for smallholders from third countries to access the EU market. By bridging legal gaps for traditional production systems, we help consortia ensure that innovation fosters social stability and respects the diversity of global food cultures.

DISABILITY RIGHTS
Advancing Cross-Sectoral Accessibility
WIISE focuses on the regulatory operationalization of assistive technologies and accessibility standards. Using our experience from the self-funded É-trike and Égalité initiatives, we provide consortia with expertise in the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) and “Inclusion-by-Design.” We ensure that project results—from physical infrastructure to digital platforms—comply with the European Disability Strategy, moving beyond simple accommodation to proactive, legally recognized autonomy.

BLOCKCHAIN
Digital Notarization for Supply Chain Integrity
We act as the technical-legal architect for digital trust, identifying the evidentiary standards needed for blockchain records to achieve “trusted status” under the EU Official Controls Regulation (Reg. EU 2017/625). Utilizing the experience from our self-funded WIISE Chain project, we help consortia move away from fragmented data silos toward immutable public ledgers, ensuring that transparency is legally robust and institutionally ready.
