FOOD ADVOCACY & JOURNALISM:

BUILDING PUBLIC TRUST THROUGH INDEPENDENT MEDIA

The modern agri-food landscape is increasingly defined by a transition from traditional promotion toward verified advocacy. In an era where digital misinformation and “greenwashing” have eroded trust, stakeholders—from institutional bodies to the end consumer—are demanding radical transparency and evidence-based reporting. This demand has moved the industry toward a regime where complex legal and scientific data must be translated into actionable information to influence both policy and market behaviours.

In this context, dissemination within European projects has evolved beyond a peripheral activity into a strategic tool for technical-legal integration. The objective is to ensure that sustainable innovations are not lost in technical isolation but are brought to the public and political agenda through high-authority, professional channels. By bridging the gap between technical data and public dialogue, advocacy now serves as a mechanism to reach both the general public and industrial decision-makers with trusted, verified evidence regarding food safety, sustainability, and ethics.

Our focus is directed toward the professional translation of complex technical-legal data into high-authority public discourse. We prioritize the transformation of research findings into verified, independent technical journalism that addresses the demand for radical transparency in the food system. By focusing on evidence-based reporting, we ensure that information regarding food safety, nutritional integrity, and sustainability reaches beyond the scientific community to influence the broader industrial and political landscape.

A central pillar of this focus is the alignment of innovation with public perception through specialized media channels. We examine how to communicate sensitive regulatory and scientific topics—such as the protein transition or circular economy frameworks—in a way that is accessible yet technically rigorous. This approach ensures that project dissemination is not merely an outreach exercise but a tool for institutional and social advocacy, protecting the rights of consumers and ensuring that innovation is recognized by both citizens and regulatory decision-makers.

Furthermore, we place a high priority on defending the integrity of the agri-food narrative against misinformation. Our focus involves the active use of our proprietary platforms—Great Italian Food Trade (GIFT) and Food Times—to provide a grounded, professional perspective on European policy and industrial excellence. By leveraging these independent media outlets, we ensure that the transition toward sustainable food systems is supported by a transparent dialogue, allowing for a legally informed and socially responsible connection between scientific breakthroughs and the public interest.

Our contribution to flagship European projects demonstrates our focus on applying technical-legal journalism to ground innovative research in public and institutional dialogue:

In the WASTELESS project, we utilized our proprietary platforms—Great Italian Food Trade (GIFT) and Food Times—to translate the complexities of blockchain-based waste monitoring into professional narratives. By focusing on evidence-based reporting, we ensured that technical data regarding food loss reached a broad audience of industry leaders and policymakers across Europe.

As a contributing voice in the Horizon4Proteins cluster, in the ProFuture project, we focused on the creation of high-impact policy briefs and articles. We examined the hurdles facing microalgae-derived proteins, using our advocacy channels to highlight the necessity of streamlined Novel Food procedures and to inform the public dialogue on the European “dietary shift.”

Within the CAMELMILK project, we applied our focus on independent journalism to raise awareness of the nutritional profiles of camel milk. By providing a grounded perspective on this traditional resource, we helped identify a market niche that supports Mediterranean smallholders while providing European consumers with verified information on safe, innovative dairy alternatives

By collaborating with WIISE, consortia integrate a perspective that bridges the gap between technical research and the public square. Our focus ensures that research outcomes are not only technically sound but are communicated through a lens of verified authority, leveraging our proprietary media assets to reach key decision-makers. This facilitates a more transparent transition to market, ensuring that project impacts are clearly understood and recognized by the institutional, industrial, and social stakeholders who drive the future of European food policy.

How can your consortium ensure its scientific milestones are translated into the verified evidence required to inform the next stage of European food policy?
